Flannel Mouth

Flannel Mouth may come from a town of a thousand, but the four-piece group has probably been described in a couple thousand ways. Their sound is unlike any other, and that’s something the guys embrace. The Peoria, IL rock band has their latest project, Pull In Your Horns EP, available now.

Check out the contest below for a chance to win their Pull In Your Horns EP, a t-shirt of choice, and some extra goodies. Contest is from 12/17 – 12/22.

How did you form?

There was a sperm cell and an egg cell in each of our mothers at one point. Then, like, reproduction, man! Reproduction is the bee’s knees. Then we were born not too far apart: September ’90, January ’91, and two Junes of ’91. We should ask Tyler’s and Ryan’s parents what day they conceived and see if it was the same day. We then grew up a little bit, moved to the same general location, and became best friends! Tyler and Luke were Backstreet Boys together, Ryan accepted our challenge to learn bass one day and came back from a weekend knowing Green Day’s “Longview,” and Zach was in another band. We asked him to join our band, then we kicked him out, and then we asked him to join our band again because we felt bad, and it was good. We wrote a song, and then we wrote a couple more, and eventually we played a show with Mike Abiuso and The Venetia Fair, got signed to Mike’s record label, SwitchBitch Records, and then we named ourselves. Now we’re all 22-23 years into being born and continuing the reproductive cycle!

What has been the highlight of your career?
Our EP release show where we had all of our friends, family, and even the record label present was excellent. We played at the Brass Rail in Peoria on March 8, 2012 and finally had a tangible handful of songs we could disperse to the people we’d been bugging for years to help us out, and the turnout was amazing, the reception was terrific, and we got drunk that night. Another time we played The Castle Theater in Bloomington, Illinois, and that was huge. That room is the exact type of room we should play every night. The biggest standout of our career thus far, however, was a beach party we played a few years ago where we built a stage out of a duck blind we tore apart, and had a giant bonfire. We found out everyone there was underage when the police came and 100 people scattered in every direction, including a good few people who dove into the river and attempted to swim away. After that we drove home, loaded into our practice space, and did a jump-five like the cast of Anchorman when they’re getting new suits.

Why should people listen to your music? What makes you different?

We think what makes us different is that we don’t sound like anyone else. We have heard every band on the planet. Often times we are told, “I don’t know what it is, but you guys have it.” That, right there, is what will be referred to as Flannel Mouth in the future. We are beyond open to the suggestion of bands who we resemble, but we can assure you, we don’t. We’ve found the biggest factor explaining why exactly we sound different is what we’re expected to sound like before we are heard, either live or via recording. It’s much less objective an answer than we’d like to give, but it’s not untrue. What we can offer you is an overall drive, gutteral emotion, determination, and honest music, because what we write is precisely where we are, so share some passion with us!
