California indie rock group, Western Scene have two loves, making music, and tacos, a wonderful combination. The band is currently recording their second EP, with an expected release late fall. Recently, the band sat down to talk about the backstory and give a behind the scenes look at their hit track, ‘See What You Want To.’
Behind The Song
“For this song we call ʻSee what you want toʼ, I wanted to create something a little different; something groovy that I thought would be exciting to hear in a lineup of thousand songs. Sometimes I think of making music in those terms. It adds a special kind of pressure and makes you question each decision. In the end if youʼre happy with it you know you given it everything you got.”
“It started drum based and then I added a bass line. It felt good right away so I ran with it. I had been listening to old soul music while out around town and randomly some older Elton John so I think those elements creeped into my head. The chorus melody came along quite easy, which seems to never happen. I sang a few lines over it and headed out for the evening.”
“The next day, as I recollect, I had pretty strong hangover and woke up with the melody in my head. That was a good sign I thought, so I dove into it some more later that day. I showed some music and non-music friends the rough ideas and they reacted quite well, which also seems to never happen. I stuck with lyric ideas from the initial conception and tried to create a down low theme sprinkled with a little hope like songwriters do sometimes.”
“In the period of 5 months we as a band went back and forth on the structure, on the chorus, on the bridge, and I even wondered if it was a good song at all. I was encouraged by my band mates to finish it so we could rehearse it, get all the parts right, and play it out. At the time I needed the push to call it complete.”
“While I believe that the initial infusion of creativity is the greatest asset to songwriting, for some reason I need to hover and pick apart a song until its right. Of course in the end we went with what was eerily close the very first version I had. To me it just means it passed the strenuous test through my head and out to the world. I know I threw everything at it that I possibly could.”
“Itʼs of note (to me anyways) that ʻSee what you want toʼ is the first song Iʼve produced/recorded/co-mixed for Western Scene. To me itʼs a special song, and I think it will showcase whats to come from the next Western Scene EP coming very soon.”
