If you are familiar with Botzy, then you can understand why “Ride The Beat” is quite possibly the favorite from his latest project. Minneapolis rapper, Botzy, released Past Tense EP on October 29th. Botsford gave us the behind the scenes details on the song, and overall intentions of the release. He talks about how the lyrics are “a pure reflection of self circumstance.” Also, we can learn why “Ride The Beat” is ultimately about two people sharing a relationship built on constant turmoil. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of Past Tense.
Background
“Ride the Beat” is a song off my Past Tense EP, and possibly my personal favorite off the release. The Past Tense EP as a whole was intended to be an artistic dump; something I could create without placing any constraints or expectations on the project. I feel as though “Ride the Beat” embodied this mentality to it’s fullest.
This song expresses how I was writing my lyrics at the time, a pure reflection of self circumstance. No inflated ego or hunger for attention, only the raw analysis of my life in the summer of 2013. The line “…pen to pad, how I deal with what we doing” speaks to this point.
At it’s core, “Ride the Beat” is about two people sharing a relationship built on constant turmoil. The subconscious need for things to NOT always be perfect. Most people view petty fights and arguments as holding no value, when in fact they provide us validation of another’s interest. They can combat our personal doubts by displaying, sometimes very passionately, the impact of our actions on another’s life.
Many people are skeptical of good times and comfort, myself included. This is a healthy human reaction that pushes us to grow in knowledge and experience. Even so, there is a very thin line between looking over your shoulder and placing bear traps in front of your feet.
Self-Sabatosh is an artists best weapon for growth. Capable of subconsciously creating issues, giving us someone to blame and plenty to write about.
Me? I just ride the beat man…
Lyrics
I just ride the beat man, the beat man.
I just ride the beat, ride the beat
I just ride the beat man, the beat man.
I just ride the beat, ride the beat
her and I are going down tonight
yeah we set it off proper, and we love to fight
giving subject to the matter,
and matter to the soul,
what really truly matter,
that pattern never hold
got me in a corner, and you talking bout’ problems
all I gotta do, is figure out how to solve them
pen to pad how I deal with what we doing
you stay so mad, but I stay so fluid
like a rain drop dripping off a gutter
I gotta get a grasp but it feels like butta
I wonder how we got here, and where we went wrong /
I wonder why we stuck here, singing this song
all day all day, she got me like
all day all day, she got me like
all day all day, she got me like
yeah, she got me in the corner singing songs
I just ride the beat man, the beat man.
I just ride the beat, ride the beat
I just ride the beat man, the beat man.
I just ride the beat, ride the beat
( repeat )
her and I are going down tonight
yeah we set it off proper, love to fight
giving subject to the matter,
and matter to the soul,
what really truly matter,
the love never go
got me in a corner, and you talking bout’ issues
and the sleeve on my hoodie like a tissue
no idea how you deal with what we doing
you seem so mad, and I wish you really knew it
like a rain drop dripping off a gutter
I gotta get a grasp but it slips like butta
I wonder how we got here, and where we went wrong /
I wonder why we stuck here, singing this song
all day all day, she got me like
all day all day, she got me like
all day all day, she got me like
yeah, she got me in the corner singing songs
I just ride the beat man, the beat man.
I just ride the beat, ride the beat
