Nightly

with Nightbreakers and Knox

Wonder Ballroom // Portland, OR // October 17, 2023

Review by Bruna Cucolo

It was a room full of love, not just from songs about love (and heartbreak) but love felt in the room. Add a disco ball to make the room glow and you’ve got a beautiful Nightly show.

The alternative pop band brought their Wear Your Heart Out Tour to 21 cities across the U.S. For their eighth stop, they played at Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon on October 17. They brought Knox along for the tour, and, in Portland, they also had the band Nightbreakers as an opener. These two acts fit so well together for the tour with Nightly, having the same energy and vibes but still being individually different from one another. The three together made up a night in Portland that felt like a warm, loving hug.

The two openers were beyond excellent for the night. Starting off with Nightbreakers, the crowd was able to get warmed up with this group’s music that had everyone dancing and getting hyped for the rest of the night. They had the audience participating by getting everyone clapping and getting really into the music. When Knox went on stage, many in the room already knew of him, so people were yelling with excitement. Many were already fans, knowing the words to his songs, singing along throughout his set. It was all one big happy moment.

“Welcome to the Nightly show” displayed on a large screen that stretched across almost the entire back of the stage. It was then that fans cheered so loud, ready for more love that night. It gave off a sort of theatrical play vibe with the image as the background of the screen. There was a payphone on the stage that rang. The band joined together onstage, frontman Jonathan Capeci answering the phone.

With the perfect opening song for them, Nightly then began their set with “wear your heart out.” This upbeat opener was the best way to get the crowd jumping and singing along loudly, especially during the chorus — it was perfection. And that’s how the rest of the night went.

The band Nightly knows how to put on a show and keep the crowd engaged throughout an entire set. From the disco ball moment during “radiohead” to the most excitement for “dirty white chucks” to just being present with the band and enjoying and feeling the music, one can say that this show will be remembered forever.

Between the fans and band interactions and the overall performance from Nightly, the atmosphere felt so heartwarming to be there. There was no other option but to fall in love with their set and to fall even more in love with this band and their music, especially from hearing it live. The tour may be over, but whenever Nightly goes back on the road, they are a must-see band. Take your best friends, your partner, someone you love, and have the best, most magical time.
