Imagine waiting three years for a band to put out a new album and it does not disappoint, it slaps. Well, Hot Mulligan is about to do just that. The post-emo band is set to release their new record on May 12 via Wax Bodega. Titled ‘Why Would I Watch,’ this masterpiece is full of some of the band’s best sounds, lyrics and vocals.

Bands tend to experiment with their projects as the years go by. This is evident in the album’s opening track, “Shouldn’t Have a Leg Hole But I Do.” It’ll throw you off guard in the best way, but hang on tight and keep listening because once the entire band kicks in, it is one of the best songs on the album. The music sounds new, it sounds fresh, but past Hot Mulligan can still be heard between the notes. And it’s like this from here on out — throughout the entirety of this record, fans can sense a change in the band’s sound and feel, but they can also reminisce about the older tunes while listening along to the new ones.

It’s not only the instrumental and vocal talents that are portrayed here. The songwriting aspect of it is also captivating, as though they really took their time in writing the most compelling lyrics in this one project. And it shows. The lyrics are not just telling stories or sharing feelings and emotions. They go deeper than that. There’s imagery, or sensory details. Listeners become more than just aware of what’s being sung, but they can imagine it or even feel some of it. Track three, “And I Smoke,” includes great detail with the lines, “My throat feels like it’s full of hair, my chest lights a flame under every breath, I choke where I stand.”

Fans listening to this new album will appreciate the band’s vision for it. They’ll tune out the rest of the world as they belt out these new-to-them lyrics and feel intense emotions. Maybe one of these 12 songs contains your new favorite lyrics. ‘Why Would I Watch’ is a brilliant record with songs that flow together as one entire thing, yet the songs can also be listened to individually on their own.

From hard-hitting instrumentals and vocals to an acoustic track, “Betty,” to more experimenting, one can’t help but feel the music rush through them as they’re blasting it in the car or through a headset lying on their bedroom floor, taking it all in. Hot Mulligan will not let you down with this one.
