Set It Off with Rain City Drive and Weathers

Hawthorne Theatre // Portland, OR // September 26, 2022

Review by Bruna Cucolo

The Fearless Records-signed band had set out on their Welcome to Elsewhere Part 2 Tour in late August playing songs including some off their latest record, Elsewhere. A month later they played their second to last show of the tour in Portland, OR on Sept. 26. They brought the bright colors with them to go along with the new era including colorful hair dye on each of their heads. Talk about a colorful set, literally. And with them were the bands Rain City Drive and Weathers who opened the show that night. This was a loud time, but a very fun one, too, full of organized chaos.

Kicking off the night was Rain City Drive, a Florida rock group. They started off very loud, like a startle almost, but it was a fun way to get the crowd going. This first band was great at getting the audience engaged by having them jump and wave their arms to their songs. Their eight-song set may seem to have been short, but it was full of energy. And speaking of energy, can’t forget about the second act of the night, Weathers. The amount of hype in the room when this band started playing was insane. Seemed as though it got louder in the room. Fans of the group sang along so loudly throughout their set. About halfway through they got extra loud, all singing, “I take my pills and I’m happy all the time” – the band seemed to be filled with joy with this which made the room feel happy. But then their time on stage came to an end, and soon enough the headliner was up.

It was during a 15-minute countdown with the mentions of the midnight society that two skeletons standing on either side of the stage were noticed, adding a type of weirdness, in a good way, to the stage presence. It was then known that the night was going to be a great one, which it was. Set It Off started their set with “Skeleton” from their newest album – the skeletons on stage made sense.

From beginning to end, the band maintained their energy and enthusiasm, never letting there be a dull moment during their set. The venue was packed and the mutual appreciation for the music was felt. It was the positive and caring atmosphere that Set It Off contributed to that added to this amusing, lively event. The messages that frontman Cody Carson would share also showed that they weren’t there just to sing songs to a crowd, but they were there to entertain, provide a safe environment for people who share the same love for their music and to have a truly good time.

They performed tunes from all over their discography such as “Killer In The Mirror,” “Hypnotized,” “Projector,” “N.M.E.” and “Nightmare.” With over 15 songs by them including a nine-minute-long song made up of multiple songs of theirs, it was a long night, but no one wanted it to end – it could have lasted until midnight. It was filled with numerous fan-favorite tracks that the crowd got excited about every time a song began.

As this was the second to last stop of this part of the tour, it is now over, but do not miss them next time they’re on the road. Set It Off may interact with the crowd a lot and keep them moving to the songs, but you won’t even notice you’re tired until it’s over. And when it is, you’ll just want more. When it’s time for them to perform, they really know what it means to put on a show that fans will enjoy and never forget about. They make everyone feel less lonely with no worries. Their show is a happy place.
