Babygirl and Jeremy Zucker

House of Blues // Chicago, IL // November 8th, 2021

Photos and review by Javi Perez

Getting away from the beginning of Chicago’s cold weather, everyone started to pack into The House of Blues eagerly. I got there just in time to see Babygirl open up. Their set sounded like the soundtrack to a dreamy, romantic, coming-of-age movie. Halfway through their set, during a soft song, someone in the crowd was about to faint. This was just days after the tragic Astroworld event, and so security took this very seriously.

The fan was quickly taken out of the crowd and received medical attention. Babygirl handled the situation with empathy and grace. They had everyone hold up their phone flashlights to close out their set, creating a beautiful candlelit atmosphere.

My favorite thing about The House of Blues in Chicago, is that if the crowd is excited and jumping enough, in the photo pit, you can feel the ground shake! The LED screens that lit the stage, pictured asteroids entering the earth’s atmosphere, suddenly it was as if the Chicxulub impactor hit the earth again. There was a blinding bright light, the floor started to shake and Jeremy Zucker came out of the shadows and onto the stage.

Being an artist since 2015, Jeremy has a vast catalog of songs to pick from when curating the set list and from the audience’s response, he made the right choices! Opening up with the delicate tune “We’re Fucked, It’s Fine” from his 2020 album “Love is not Dying.” An album that is finally getting it’s time to shine since being released shortly after the pandemic started. Old fan favorites, like “Comethru” had the fans screaming every word,  showing how long lasting the mutual connection is between him and his fans.

Additionally songs like “You Were Good to Me” from his side collab project with artist, Chelsea Cutler, made the cut. My favorite moments were when he played songs off his 2021 release, Crusher. The song “Therapist” has a hard hitting chorus that demands to be screamed. The song “18” has a similar vibe to “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne.

He closed out the show with new favorite “Supercuts” that is groovy and fun to sing along to! There was some hesitancy in the crowd if he was going to do an encore, but with a little bit of patience and a Jeremy chant, he performed an oldie but a goodie, “Talk is Overrated.” This song has the lyric, “talk is overrated, lets just vibe” which perfectly sums up a Jeremy Zucker concert. The vibes are immaculate, you sing, you dance and maybe shed a tear or two, sounds like a perfect night to me!
