New Found Glory, Hot Mulligan and LØLØ

Crystal Ballroom // Portland, Oregon // Sept. 12, 2021

Review by Bruna Cucolo

The music genre pop-punk is still thriving, and the band New Found Glory is living proof of this. They’ve set out on tour at the end of last month which will run through mid-October. The Pop Punk’s Still Not Dead Tour brings bands together for a whole night of music within this genre. On Sept. 12, they made a stop in Portland, Oregon and performed at McMenamins Crystal Ballroom. Joining New Found Glory were LØLØ and Hot Mulligan, two special guests that incorporated their music with the headliner which created a very loud night.

It was the first opener who got the night started from the very beginning. As she entered the stage and made her way to the center, LØLØ exclaimed, “Make some noise!” and that is exactly what the crowd did. Throughout this set, the frontwoman presented her outgoing personality which got everyone in the room even more excited for the rest of the show.

Hot Mulligan, the second opener, had the crowd cheering from the very beginning of their set until the end of each song and every moment in between. Following the excitement the audience displayed throughout Hot Mulligan’s set, one may have wondered if those in the venue would be capable of keeping up the same energy during the headliner’s performance. To anyone’s surprise, they showed even more hype.

Some type of audio played as if hearing a carnival going on. Then, a glass-shattering sound went through the speakers and New Found Glory’s banner with a roller-coaster illustration was revealed at the back of the stage. Once the band was on stage, they played their first song, “Understatement,” and everyone in the room sang along at the top of their lungs as they jumped along to the song. The setlist also included “All Downhill From Here,” “Dressed to Kill,” “Forget My Name,” “Hit or Miss” and many others.

Like at any other concert, the music was at a high volume, yet the fans were still heard above the speakers. Even when the band played some covers throughout the night, those inside still sang above the music. The cover that fans seemed to enjoy most that night was the song “Let It Go” from Disney’s movie Frozen. Frontman Jordan Pundik was even dressed up as Elsa from the movie which took the band’s performance to a whole new level.

With 17 songs on the setlist plus three for the encore, which ended with “My Friends Over You,” everyone seemed stoked to be there including those in the band. New Found Glory won the hearts of everyone in attendance with their stage presence — they were so lively that even the people in the balcony of the venue fully participated in singing and moving along to the music.

Catch New Found Glory on tour ’til mid-October for a heavy amount of pop punk. This is a tour that will keep you on your feet and have adrenaline rushing through your body as if you’re on a roller coaster. For most of the remaining dates, the band Less Than Jake will be co-headlining. Pop punk will most definitely be alive during these shows. Tickets can be purchased here.
