Royal & The Serpent and PVRIS

House Of Blues // Chicago, IL // August 7th, 2021

Photos and review by Javi Perez

After what feels like an eternity, shows are slowly coming back. I can’t put into words how much I missed being in a packed room with strangers, screaming the lyrics to songs while we realize we get to live at the same time as our favorite artists. It is a uniquely beautiful experience that I will never take for granted.

Royal & The Serpent

I had the pleasure of seeing Royal & The Serpent open up for PVRIS at The House of Blues in Chicago, IL. When both Royal & The Serpent and support band Beauty School Dropout walked on stage, they were met with the screams of eager fans.

You may know Royal from her hit song “Overwhelmed” that went viral through TikTok. Her sound changes like a mood ring with songs like “phuck u” that got the crowd to scream their pent up frustrations into the loudest fuck you I’ve heard to “girls” that feels like a early 2000s pop anthem about liking girls. They rounded out the night by paying respects to Chicago native Juice WRLD with a cover of his song “Lucid Dreams.”

PVRIS

With the projector screen slowly retracting back up, it was time for PVRIS to take the stage. I was so excited to finally see the band who, with every song, creates a universe that pulls you in. They opened with their newest single “Monster” that got everyone in the venue jumping, the floor literally felt like it was going to collapse from underneath us, and it was only the first song.

With it being a sold out show, PVRIS fans are like no other, sporting their cvlt sports tees from the Warped Tour era when the band first gained traction. PVRIS is THAT band, once you listen to their music, you are sucked into the haunted sounds of the first EP “White Noise” to the new synth landscape of “Use Me.” With such a big catalog of songs, they leaned into their newest era by playing songs including “Stay Gold,” “Gimme a Minute” and some unreleased material. On social media they are teasing a new era, sweatblvvdtears, it’s still a mystery but I am so excited to find out just what PVRIS have up their sleeves.
