After his March release of the 21-track album ~how i’m feeling~, Lauv has put out a new EP, Without You, featuring four songs. Lauv created this piece during quarantine and is ready to share it with his fans.

The EP, released on June 26, has a familiar sound to his previous projects, but it is also the opposite of his latest work. These songs, made up of raw lyrics, are relatable to anyone who has gone through heartbreak. After a quick listen, the listener will instantly be filled with emotion by the end.

It begins with its opening track “Dishes,” which seems to be an introduction to his heartbreak. The second line shows how he feels about the situation he is in and a concluded decision – “I’m done getting stressed for you” shows he is ready to move on. But it “feels so weird without you” and, in reality, he is sad with the position he has been placed in. The lower guitar notes in this song indicate the sorrow and pain he is feeling.

Lauv gets right to it with sharing what the other person did to hurt him. In “Mine (You Can’t Find Love in Mollywood),” the second track, he sings of the girl having a friend whom she was loving. He feels played by her and realized that “I guess that you were never really mine.” This more up-tempo track makes the listener want to move about in the room, possibly a sign of them getting rid of the someone-who-did-them-wrong’s bad energy. While the chorus is made up of lyrics of what was done and how he feels, singing it out loud can make one feel better.

In song three, “Miss Me – Demo,” Lauv sings of how he would do anything to get back with the other person. He worries that he might have been the one to mess things up with “was it something I said that made you get inside your head?” yet she is the one messing with his head. Although she has hurt him, he would still go back to her and he hates that he would. He does not understand, expressing again that he was played with. Although a much shorter track, this one is full of expression.

The EP ends with “Love Somebody” where he now expresses his regrets for what he has previously done. He asks himself “Why do I do this?” and goes through the song expressing how he does not want to hurt anyone but is sorry he did. This closing track fits well where it is placed – after going through feeling the pain he went through, he now apologizes for what he did.

Without You, following track by track, is almost like saying, “I’m done with you, you hurt me, but I’m also sorry on behalf of my wrongdoings.” When looking back, ~how i’m feeling~ is made up of some songs with excitement about being with someone new and exploring his feelings towards them, but Without You is unlike it with its heartbreak tracks.

The EP has lowkey vibes, but with a sprinkle of an upbeat tempo to give off feelings of hope. As a shorter EP, this is the perfect listen for when you need a quick rush of emotions.
