Caravan Palace

O2 Academy // Birmingham, England // 1 February, 2020

Photos and review by Sophie Jones

Caravan Palace is a French 1920s-inspired electro-swing (among other styles) band from Paris. The band consists of Zoè Colotis (vocals), Arnaud Vial (guitar and vocals), Lucas Saint-Criq (saxophone and clarinet), Charles Delaport (double bass and electronics), Martin Berlugue (trombone), and Paul-Marie Barbier (percussion).

Tonight they graced the Birmingham’s O2 Academy on their final date of their UK tour before heading to Europe. They started the night off with “Comics,” “Wonderland” and “Plume,” which saw Zoè teaching the audience the dance moves beforehand.

They also performed my personal favourite track “Lone Digger” which I first saw them perform many years ago on the Variety Performance show; this sent the place into a dance frenzy with everyone bobbing and swaying along.

The band also brought out an amazing dancer to demonstrate his 1920s-esque moves throughout various parts of their set. Zoé joined in on a couple of numbers and it was this combined effort that really took the gig and the overall positive, energetic vibe – to another level.

At the end of the night the band joined together and took center stage to take a bow. They received a standing ovation from the people in the balcony and obviously everyone on the floor was already stood up cheering and applauding the performance; the band looked overwhelmed by the response and eventually Zoè stepped forward and said they were speechless which lead to more applause. This went on for 5 minutes or more before the band left the stage to people shouting “encore encore” but sadly that was the end of the night.
