Hozier

The Greek Theatre // Berkeley, CA // October 22nd, 2019

Photos and review by Justine Willard

The last time Hozier played at the Greek Theatere in Berkeley was in 2015. He returned to its stage on Thursday, October 22nd and shared with the crowd that the Greek holds a lot of special memories, and it was wonderful to be back.

There wasn’t a single free space to sit or stand with the show being beyond sold out. Hozier began the night with “As It Was” from his new album, Wasteland Baby!. Behind Hozier was a full band with fierce lighting, which helped enhance his performance to a whole new level.

As a special treat for the fans, he shared an unreleased song called “Jack Boot Jump.” Before he began playing the song, he asked everyone in the crowd to put their phones away, so others would not hear it before the actual release.

Next, he asked the crowd to sing along to the tunes “From Eden” as well as “Shrike,” a song about the beautiful and terrifying bird, that was played next. Love is both beautiful and scary, so why not name a love song after the feathered creature?

To end the night, Hozier played his well-known hit “Take Me to Church.” I think every single person in the crowd was singing the lyrics. Some fans in the front were even holding up pride flags during the song. The crowd applauded for a long time after “Take Me to Church” ended. Hozier returned to the stage for an encore and sang “Cherry Wine” and “Work Song,” which are both songs from his debut self titled album, Hozier, which dropped in 2014.

Throughout his hour and a half long set, Hozier sang beautifully and showed off his guitar skills. Time flew by just listening to his captivating voice. Hozier just began the American leg of his tour, so you have until the end of the year to see him live.
