What a treat it was to see Ty Segall & The Freedom Band kick off their 2 and a half month residency at Downtown L.A.’s Teragram Ballroom. Ty boldly revealed the harmonious glory that came from experiencing a six-piece band courageously play through two albums with ease and style.

Never playing an album in its entirety before, Ty Segall now had an order to follow for this show and that order started with the band’s newly released album, First Trade. The first night’s audience received the opportunity to hear the tracks before their release date, something that can’t be said about the residency’s audiences who followed. Not veering far off the path from Ty’s more recent material, the new album has California’s grunge rocker continuing on his desert psychedelia sound, but still providing us with different twists and turns along the way.

The multi-instrumentalist impressed us with his ability to lead a band without being in the center of the stage. His modesty is known among most. It’s refreshing to see such a talented person honor those he’s surrounded by.

Following his newest album, Ty then began to play 2010’s Melted. This album has a more hardcore sounding structure then his more current material. The songs kept us rocking our heads while helping to support a raging pit throughout the night, of course.

Ty Segall said in an interview with the LA Times, “Selfishly, I wanted to do a residency in L.A. as a way to stay home for the summer, and that led to wanting to do different albums and really go crazy.” It was a crazy night for sure thanks to Ty Segall & The Freedom Band.

The band’s Teragram Ballroom residency will come to an end on September 27th, but Brooklyn will follow with a 5-night residency. Tickets are available for purchase here.
