REVIEW: HAWXX – “The Lie”

It’s UK metal-band artist HAWXX that gets me excited for what that side of the music scene has to offer going forward. With their newest single “the Lie,” the dynamic force of acid and energy the track leaves in its wake is enough to grab the attention of those who say that Metal is dead.

In the thick of the turmoil of BREXIT, HAWXX took a political stance as “the Lie” is a stout reflection of our political climate. Focusing on those in power, it follows the untruths and fear-mongering that has soured the media and helped manipulate the masses into a state of lulled complacency and apathy. The lyrics even take references like “newspeak” from George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 which details a society that is overpowered and silenced by the government, brain-washing and numbing the public. All of this is laid overtop a controlled chaos of thick reverb, heavy-hitting guitars, and brash instrumentals. Yet, vocalist Anna never wavers as her voice cuts right through, being the show-stopper of “the Lie.”

It’s reassuring and powerful to hear such a dominant and biting female vocalist in Metal hold her own and burn past fellow males in the scene. HAWXX is made from a different vein, and it is nothing short of exhilarating to see where this brand of Tart will excel at next.
