Andy Black, also known as the lead singer of Black Veil Brides, has come out with a fresh new sophomore solo album that’s ready to make a difference. This album, The Ghost of Ohio, is very different from his previous one, so do not go into this album expecting the same thing. And different, just to make it clear, does not mean it is not great, because it is. The Republic Records album is made up of very unique melodies, each song unlike the other. Listening to this record is wonderful, not only because of the distinctive sounds, but also of the messages within.

The album begins with a mysterious track, sound wise. It is a powerful tune with its music, and you can tell that this album will have an impact on every listener. Then the second song, “The Promise,” starts up with drums that really stand out.  This particular song is the first that makes you want to dance, tap your foot, or just nod your head to the music. “Soul Like Me,” track five, is a very powerful one. It is a song about wanting to be found. You are tired of “living in this hell,” it is exhausting. Being alone is not always a good feeling. Black sings, “lately everywhere I go I’ve been feeling like a ghost inside and I’m dying to find another lost soul like me.” It gives you hope because you then know that you are not alone in this world and there are others who feel the same way as you do.

“Ghost of Ohio” is a strong track for Black because of its deeper meaning. It is him remembering his younger days when he lived in Ohio. He sings of how he felt back then and how he feels now about home. Hoping that he could go back and wander, he sings, “Maybe we could stay here for a little while,” and roam around in a neighborhood. Things there are no longer the same but he also wonders if it is his memories that have changed. This song hits home because it is about his home, literally, and it becomes even more meaningful to him. And the fact that he is able to share this with his fans means something great.

This album as a whole has more messages within the tracks that the listener can hear and might even relate to. Black’s vulnerability is shown through his lyrics which will pull in the listener even more. The album has a variety of sounds – it sounds close to pop with its upbeat music at times – while resembling the previous record in a way that does not mimic it. Black’s immensely unique voice is portrayed very well among the instruments and the listener can appreciate that.

If you are not moved after listening to this album, listen to it again. Its lyrics are deep and will touch you. Whether you have been through the same things or not, you will be affected by this album.
