Hit The Lights – Just To Get Through To You
Review by Annette Hansen

Taking an old song and giving it new life can be a challenging feat. Hit The Lights took on such a task with their new EP, Just To Get Through To You, which is comprised of five reworked acoustic tracks and one original number. For this EP, several of the band’s former tunes received a laid back and stripped down makeover.

Listening to the first half of the EP, it’s easy to hear how nice these songs sound with the electric guitars traded for acoustic ones, but the opening tracks, “Blasphemy, Myself, and I” and “Drop The Girl” don’t feel like they bring anything new in their reworked versions. At least for these songs, it didn’t feel like the acoustic treatment did much to shake up what was already there.

As Just To Get Through To You moves along, however, the songs seem to find a new life in their reworked versions. This is particularly the case with songs like “Fucked Up Kids” and “Summer Bones.” The former takes things down a notch from the energetic original and offers a song with uplifting lyrics and melody that is hard not to sing along with. “Summer Bones” really feels like it should have been acoustic all along. The mellowed version of the song just pairs so well with the more melancholy lyrics.

The final track, “Lighthouse,” wraps things up on a surprisingly electric note. The song of lost love begins on a gentle acoustic note, but eventually builds into an emotional and booming end. It’s kind of a twist ending for this EP, but it works so well and offers a satisfying sign off.

Overall, fans of Hit The Lights will probably appreciate the nostalgic sentiment of the EP while newcomers may find it to be a great introduction into the band’s discography.
