Behind The Song: TeamMate, “Nothing’s Ever Over”

Electronic op duo Teammate love exciting beats and energetic performances. Their new track, “Nothing’s Ever Over” combines both of these. Recently, the duo opened up to us about the story behind the track and what it means to them. You can stream the track here.

“Nothing’s Ever Over” started with a track idea that I had. I put down a basic track idea and then Dani and I got together to write the lyric and melody. I didn’t have any verses but I liked the idea of having this super falsetto chorus. We knew early on that we wanted to sing this one in unison together like a lot of our other songs so that gave us some idea of the vocal range we could work within for the melody. We thought it needed a bit of a break so we did a little call and response thing in the pre-chorus.

After we thought we had something cool, we worked together to finish the track and record each of our parts. The song grew as we kept experimenting with it. For example, the shouts right before the chorus were something we added at the very end of the writing process because we felt like we wanted just a little bit of a curveball in the form at the moment.

Lyrically in my original demo, I was scatting words that were either exactly or sounded like “We don’t have to fall out of love ’cause nothing’s ever over”. I think we tried to beat that out but nothing sang quite as well or had such an emotional connection. So, we worked together to figure out what this subconsciously mumbled lyric could mean. We came up with the idea of telling our story of being together, breaking up and rebuilding as friends and bandmates.
