Review: Justin Bieber Purpose

0

Three years after the release of Believe, pop-star Justin Bieber returns with his fourth studio album, Purpose. Purpose was well worth the wait for long-term fans and will no doubt pull in new fans with its eclectic sound and undeniable growth from Bieber. Produced alongside EDM mastermind Skrillex, Purpose is notable for it’s atmospheric, bass and synth driven, pop/hip-hop sound, an incredible maturation for the young star of only 21. The album also features heart-felt lyrics about heartbreak, self-love, and world change, particularly on track “Children.” The track opens with the lyrics, “What about the children/Look at the all children we can change” and continues with empowering lines about being the generation capable of making change in a world masked by corruption.

The album also includes a myriad of featured artists such as alt. pop sensation Halsey on “The Feeling,” rapper Big Sean on “No Pressure” and notable songwriter and musician Ed Sheeran on the lull ballad of “Love Yourself.” The song, with its use of a single electric guitar pared with Bieber’s lofty vocals, creates a gentle, soothing listen making it a stand out track on an album loaded with heavy beats and electro-dance sounds.

Overall, the album is a triumphant improvement for the mega pop star. Bieber expanded his musical palette and brought in a wide-range of sounds and instruments from trumpets to synthesizers and trap hi-hats; as well as incorporating diverse messages and themes, creating a fun, inspiring, and alluring fourth studio album.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
