Behind The Song: My Enemies and I, “Carbon Copy”

Metalcore outfit, My Enemies and I deliver brutal and unrelating tracks. With the release of their new EP, Sick World, singer Jeff Hill and guitarist Zach Jones went behind the scenes for their song, “Carbon Copy.”

When I sat down to write what came to be “Carbon Copy” I knew that I wanted to take it in a slightly different direction than the rest of our EP. I wanted the song to be relatively simple and easy to listen to where as some of our other songs are a little more complex. I went back to my roots when writing the guitars and drums which is why the song is pretty rock driven. We all grew up listening to bands like Linkin Park, Slipknot, Korn, and Seether so that’s where our Nu Metal and Rock influence comes from. The first part of the song that I wrote was the chorus and built everything else around that. We had 4 or 5 different versions of this song before we got it exactly how we wanted it. Our main goal is to make a song that everyone can bang their head and sing along to. We hope everyone enjoys the song because we had a blast making it!

Jeff and I usually write songs through email. We live over an hour away from each other and unfortunately can’t always be together to write so email just works best for us. I’ll send him a demo of a new song that I’m working on and he’ll start writing the lyrics and melodies to the song. The direction he takes lyrically always depends on the vibe he feels when he hears the song for the first time.

Carbon Copy is about being yourself. A lot of people seek the acceptance of other by becoming something the are not. This song is about those people and the pressure from society to follow in their footsteps. I know in my experience I get a lot of flack for pursuing a musical career. It’s not respected as a “real job.”

I’ve heard numerous times “why don’t you get a real job” but this is what I want to do. I could easily live what others view as a respectable life, but I am going to do what I feel.

Carbon Copy Lyrics:

 All lined up

Like cattle waiting for slaughter
What the hell are you’re doing
Or does it even fucking matter?
They tell you, you listen
Blindly you give in
And follow their every fucking move

Another face
Exactly like the rest
The very ones I’ve grown to hate
You’re nothing more than a carbon copy
Broken dreams
Controlling everything around me
And I don’t wanna be just another mindless
Frail machine

Masks on their faces
To hide the ugly, tasteless, shallow, miserable person they’ve become
Obsessive fanatic
You’re made of plastic
You’re only fooling yourselves

We won’t be swayed
No we won’t be tempted
We won’t be swayed
We won’t be tempted
We’ll never change
Lose yourself
Abandon hope
Give in to them
Get rich then die alone
Lose yourself
Abandon hope
Give in to them
Get fucked then die alone
