Ten Songs To Get You Excited for Halloween

The crunch of the autumn leaves, the smell of the crisp air, and the warm taste of pumpkin spice lattes all take a backseat to Halloween when it comes to October. I’ve traded all of the pop-punk, pop, and catchy, easy listening off my iPod for metal, goth, and other creepish tunes to jump into the pre-Halloween season. Accompanied with the their respectively spooky music videos and descriptions, I’ve compiled a list of jams to let your inner freak out.
The Misfits – Halloween
Even though every day isn’t Halloween to most people, The Misfits have pretty much branded their entire image around all things spooky. This song is definitely a Halloween staple explaining every cliche known to man.
My Chemical Romance – Cemetery Drive
While MCR have many songs which are about death, “Cemetery Drive” is my favorite song about post-mortem off their sophomore album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.
The Maine – Forever Halloween
This one is pretty self explanatory, and if you can’t figure it out, this song is literally about Halloween. I suggest to get the entire album, Forever Halloween, because this is the best album The Maine have ever put out and it worked out very well for them.
Marilyn Manson – Personal Jesus
Yeah, I could’ve totally picked his cover of “This is Halloween,” but I feel like Manson’s “Personal Jesus” is way more fun. This song is Halloween-esque to me because Manson’s ironic religious lyrics, “your own personal Jesus/someone to hear your prayers,” go against all things cutesy, bright, and light.
The Damned Things – Graverobber
While The Damned Things were a short lived side project of various bands, their Ironiclast album holds a song about robbing graves. What’s creepier than that?
Mastodon – Halloween
Mastodon’s song “Halloween” off their most recent album Once More ‘Round The Sun is most suited to be played on your way to a haunted house or a zombie infested nightmare. The lyrics, “You will find spirits never rise/without warning/feel your fate as you come alive/they’re here to take you home,” lay somewhere in between creepy and gothic; maybe a little of both.
Evanescence – Bring Me To Life
Yeah, this song is pretty cheesy, but everyone knows all the words to it.
H.I.M. – Your Sweet Six Six Six
Nothing says goth like like H.I.M. and nothing says scary like telling someone you’re ready to take the devil into their heart. I admit, it may be a tad corny, but it made the cut.
Fleetwood Mac – Sara
This isn’t your average (or any for that matter) Halloween song. If you’ve seen American Horror Story: Coven, then you KNOW the best witch of all is Misty Day. Besides the show being a perfect fit to be categorized as “Halloween-y,” this song is played by Stevie Nicks obsessed witch, Misty Day, right before she *SPOILER ALERT* brings the dead back to life.
Every Time I Die – We’rewolf
Saving the best for last, how could I possibly forget about Every Time I Die’s ode to partying: We’rewolf. With lyrics like, “look away it’s too much to bear/I’ve been bitten by the party animal,” it’s impossible to not let your inner wolf out when this song comes on.
