The American Scene – Haze
Review by Olivia Adams

Despite the current trends of pop-punk and emo-indie-shoegaze-whatever you may call it-rock, The American Scene has created a calming yet upbeat feeling album titled Haze that strays away from these norms. While it’s nothing innovative, the band’s second full-length album is definitely one for the books. This could be described a merriment of Jimmy Eat World and Brand New, but also breeds inspirations from grunge, emo, and pop. With this new record, The American Scene has continued to mix an early-2000’s emo-indie sound with today’s pop-rock influences.

Produced by Sam Pura (The Story So Far, Basement, State Champs) Haze does a phenomenal job of establishing a synthesis between soothing harmonies and penetrating, fast-paced melodies. Choose any song and you’ll be singing or nodding your head along in minutes. “Royal Blue” (for which the band has released a music video) is one of the catchiest songs on the record while “What I Could Gather” is a close second. Bottom line, it was very hard to choose my favorite. Haze follows The American Scene’s previous contemporary positive fashion and creates psychedelic feelings of longing, love, and the ups and downs of every day life. Nearly every single song bars a repeat listen from me.
