Five Albums To Help Get Over A Bad Breakup
Words and Picks by Catt Kruger

The Story So Far/Maker – Split EP
The Story So Far/Maker was a split EP made in 2010 by both the Story so Far and Maker and honestly is the perfect album to get over a breakup. It’s only composed of three songs but each song reflects on the different stages of a break up. In the song “Brevity” you find yourself reading through the lyrics, the song is about how someone only brought them down in the end. You switch over to the last two tracks on it, Mt. Diablo and 680 South give you justification and ease about a breakup. Sometimes you need to hear lyrics that you can connect yourself too, to ultimately start to let go.

Circa Survive – Blue Sky Noise
Blue Sky Noise by Circa Survive is another great album to listen to, after a bad breakup. You have to really dive into this album and sink into the lyrics to find meaning. Circa Survive always has a crafty way of wording their songs, you can always take a part of each one and relate it to something, such as a bad breakup. Songs like “I Felt Free” and “Get Out” (plus every other song) speak in different ways that can make the breakup a little less painful. Music is therapeutic and when you really dive into the meanings of songs, it’s sometimes easy to start finding out the meaning of how good it will be, to let go and move on.

Of Montreal – Paralytic Stalks
Paralytic Stalks
by Of Montreal is an album all about romantic strife. It focuses on the built up anger and release of feelings over what could be related to a bad breakup. This is an album to send away any angry energy you have felt or still feel about your ex. Sometimes rocking out to an album is all the therapy anyone needs to get over something.

The Weeknd – Trilogy
Trilogy by The Weeknd takes a huge romantic and sexual approach to a breakup. It is an album letting go of all the pain that was done, all the milestones that were reached, it’s all about letting go. This album is an essential one to listen to when getting over a bad breakup. Sometimes you need to listen to lyrics, match them up to your situation, and learn how to go on from there. It’s motivation to get the bad out, and to remember to never look back.

Brand New – Deja Entendu
Deja Entendu
takes a more dark turn to be an album to get over a bad breakup, but ultimately it’s beneficial to accept that all the pain has happened and now you can move on from there. This album touches on different levels of angst, and how people put their all into things, just to get nothing back. Of course it’s all upsetting but once faced with the reality, why would you want to go back to someone who put you through a bad breakup? This album is powerful and is a great album to listen to after a bad breakup.
