Impending Doom – Death Will Reign
Review by Steven Smith

Mosher’s rejoice!  Christian heavy metal band, Impending Doom put out a new record today entitled Death Will Reign. The record marks the fifth studio release from the slayers of Riverside, California.  But don’t get too excited, we’re on the fence with this one.

Having already released the song “Death Will Reign” earlier this fall, the bar was set pretty high for the rest of the record.  Unfortunately, similar to most albums, that song was the high point.

The record gets off to a slow start. The opening track “Ravenous Disease” was your typical Doom song. In terms of the record overall, it’s heavy, it’s got your booming break downs and vicious vocals, but, the band doesn’t seem to show any diversity on this one, much like their others.  Musically, the songs are somewhat repetitive.

Lyrically, this album is awesome. Brook Reeves really sheds his insight on Christianity, and how it’s perceived today.  His ability to blend a brutal harsh reality and promising hope of Christianity was well constructed.  It was easy to tell that he dug deep when writing the lyrics.

The first half of the record is decent, but disinterest grew after about the sixth song.  If you’re a devoted Doom fan, or just a plain metal head, than you’ll probably love this record.  However, if you were looking for something “extra” with this album, hate to break it to you, but you won’t find it.

Bashing the record completely is a bit unfair though.  “Doomsday” and “Hellhole” were a nice little attachment to the fun and excitement of Death Will Reign, and the lyrics did do the album a little bit of justice.

The record is okay, but nothing more than that.  Its lack of diversity and its repetitive musical structure is what lead to its review.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Recommended Tacks: “Death Will Reign” and “Doomsday”
