Five Albums to Play at a Halloween Party
Words and Picks by Annette Schaefer

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday. I love the idea that I can dress up and be whoever I want, watch a ton of scary movies and hang out with my friends while listening to some great music. Music is an important part to throwing any party. It’s essential that the music sets the right mood and is something you and your friends can enjoy together. Or you could always go with my method: It’s my party and I’ll play My Chemical Romance if I want to.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Original Soundtrack
This one is a classic! It goes with the spooky and wild theme of Halloween. The music is fun, catchy and most people should at least be familiar with it. If you can’t get your friends to sing and dance along to “The Time Warp” then I’m afraid you need to get new friends. And yes, it has to be the original soundtrack. Even I will admit that I love Glee, but it’s just not the same as hearing Tim Curry rock it on “Sweet Transvestite.”

AFI – Crash Love
I honestly don’t have a really good reason for putting this album on the list other than I actually played it at a Halloween party once and it suited the atmosphere perfectly. AFI’s dark, edgy and beautiful brand of rock is perfect for setting the mood at a Halloween party. Besides, this album doesn’t seem to get a lot of love, so let’s give it a bit of the attention it deserves this Halloween.

Avenged Sevenfold – Avenged Sevenfold
Maybe it’s just me, but Halloween just isn’t Halloween without heavy music. Avenged Sevenfold’s self-titled album is a perfect album to blast at a Halloween party, several of the songs are about death, are heavy enough to get your friends in a spooky spirit and are catchy enough to make them want to dance. Besides what’s a Halloween party without listening to “A Little Piece of Heaven” at least once?

My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade
See, I said I’d play My Chemical Romance if I wanted to. The Black Parade is also very fitting with its overarching death theme. The songs on here are anathematic and sometimes a bit creepy, “Mama” for example. Plus if you’re anything like me, you and your friends will have no problem belting out the lyrics to “Famous Last Words.”

The Maine – Forever Halloween
For a little bit of lighter music at your party The Maine’s recent release Forever Halloween is perfect. This album has a bit of a darker feel, but is just as light and fun. “Love & Drugs” is impossibly infectious and “Forever Halloween”…well I mean Halloween is in the title.
