Dresses – Sun Shy
Review by Jenn Stookey

Dresses is a band you truly do not want to look over and think “Eh, I’ll listen to them tomorrow,” when we all know that’s never going to happen. The first time I heard this band was this past spring when I watched their new video at the time for the title track of this album, “Sun Shy.” Ever sense I have been beyond hooked. In fact just the other day I had the song on repeat as I walked from my apartment to class, from class to class, and from class back to my apartment. I even expressed my love for this band to a few of my friends this past week. The whole point of me telling you this is that Dresses know what’s going on. They have it and they have it all.

This girlfriend-boyfriend duo mesh so perfectly well it scares me. They don’t battle for the limelight in each song, but compliment each other effortlessly. Their calm yet energetic essence is what cultivates a different feeling from what you might not get when listening to someone like Smallpools or Passion Pit. It’s not all hyped up all the time, and even when it is, you can still feel that relaxed part the song conveys.

Like I stated before, “Sun Shy” was the first song I had heard from this band. Naturally, it has won over my heart for the best track on this album. However, I do love their song “Painting Roses.” It’s definitely a slower track on the album but not slow in the sense of feeling the tempo drag. It is slow in the fact it is softer and polite. Its main focus is embellishing the actual feeling of love, and it’s truly beautiful. I definitely recommend this track of a nice simple change of pace.

Another track I am more than happy with is “Tell A Lie.” Out of all of the tracks on this album, this one definitely has less of a delicate feel, which to me isn’t bad at all. It shares a more full rock band sound and less of an electric pop or indie feel. Once again the duel vocals compliment each other in just the way they should, bringing out each highlight of both ranges.

This is such a great album. I’m ecstatic the time is finally here for all to listen. This week you can listen stream the full album on Pandora Premieres (until 9/2) but don’t forget to pick up a digital copy for yourself on 9/3. And if you love it so much (like myself) grab a physical copy on 10/22.

Overall Rating: 5/5
