Tommy & The High Pilots – Only Human
Review by Morgan Waldorf

Santa Barbara four piece Tommy & The High Pilots have been making music since 2008 but are bound to gain more exposure with the release of their newest album Only Human. The album which is the band’s third full-length came out last week followed by the band’s first television performance on Carson Daly this week.

The album showcases the bands songwriting abilities and includes a variety of different types of songs while still setting a uniform vibe. It draws influence from bands along the lines of Augustana and Imagine Dragons and is sure to appeal to fans of that genre.

The opening track “Get Up” is catchy and reminds me of something the band fun. would produce. The second song “Outta My Head” is probably the song with the most lively and energetic feel on the entire album and is a perfect single.

Aside from the catchier songs there are some parts of the record that slow down with more of a country or folk influence. This includes tracks “Devil To Pay” which features beautiful harmonies and “Here In My Hands” which showcases vocalist Tommy Cantillon’s voice.

“Somebody Make a Move” and “Painted Cave” are two highlights towards the end of the record. “Somebody Make a Move” is another extremely fun and catchy song to round out the latter half of the record. It’s catchy while still being unique enough that I imagine I could listen to it over and over and not become sick of it. “Painted Cave” is a beautiful song that builds slowly and ends the record nicely.

Only Human is an album that’s hard to choose a favorite from because there are so many stand out tracks and listening to it as a whole is very enjoyable. Tommy & The High Pilots are definitely a band to watch with potential of becoming the next big thing.
