Little Mix – DNA
Review by Jenn Stookey

They sprouted from Europe’s hit vocal talent television show, the X-Factor, one season after One Direction and Cher Lloyd, they have the British girl band image like that of the Spice Girls and they hold the vocal soul and power similar to Destiny’s Child. After a slight mix up with what the band would officially be named, Little Mix was decided, and are the newest big thing to hit the airwaves with their single “Wings” that put them on the map across the globe. They are here and with the release of their new album, DNA, it seems like they are here to stay.

Before this album reached my ears, I heard their single “Wings” on the radio as I was driving through town after grabbing my weekly Starbucks. I immediately was intrigued by the power of the vocals and the Top 40 pop sound that resonated through my car. I grabbed by phone to Shazam the song and Little Mix came up as the artist. I had heard of this band multiple times but never actually took the time to listen to their music. Now, I’m all about this band.

As far as their album as a whole goes, it was not my favorite. I feel as though it lacked originality from other pop group albums. Even the beginning of their song “How Ya Doin’?” included a fake phone call, which is a tactic that is overused. However, tracks such as “DNA” and  “Stereo Soldier” showcase beautifully how talented these four girls really are. Their ballad “Turn Your Face” impressed me as well and I immediately thought of how their voices sounded like four Christina Aguilera’s blending together incredible harmonies, which was mind blowing as I listened to this track for the first time.

Like I said, I didn’t find myself intrigued with the album as a whole. However, I feel if I heard each song alone and not in a collection, I would have enjoyed them more. This is a talented group and they shouldn’t go unnoticed. I believe this was a decent album for Little Mix but I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the rest of their career.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5
