Bridges and Powerlines – Better
Review by Perry Fish

As humans, it is not uncommon for us to go through stages of growth and change – moments of rebellion, self-discovery, and soul searching.  But in someway, we always end up coming back to where we started, almost as if it was where we were destined to be all along.  Bridges and Powerlines is a band that has lived this truth.  With their latest release, Better, a mini-LP composed of six tracks, Bridges and Powerlines have embraced their calling.

In 2007 Bridges and Powerlines released their first album, a self-titled EP.  Their electric, indie-rock sound was introduced to the music scene and became their identifier.  After several changes in the band’s lineup, influences, and overall sound, they seem to have made their way back.

The title of this album couldn’t be more fitting.  “Bushwick” opens at full force, sounding like a combination of Foo Fighters and Passion Pit.  “Park Slope” is full of hopeful lyrics and catchy instrumentals that will leave your head bobbing and your feet moving before you even know what’s happening.  After a strong introduction, “Williamsburg” calms the tone a bit with airy, electric solos.  “East New York” follows, announcing the anthem of the album in an acappella display, with lyrics proclaiming, “Better, I’m doing better.”

It an appropriate fashion, it appears Bridges and Powerlines has saved the best for last with the final two tracks on the album.  “Greenpoint” is the perfect mix of soft piano tunes and uplifting drumbeats, with some trumpet thrown in for good measure.  “Red Hook” closes out the album in a mature composition, showcasing just how far they have really come.

Much like the band’s career leading up to this point, Better is an impressive display of diversity in such a small collection.  Through the good and the bad, Bridges and Powerlines has pushed through and overcome.  With a continuously growing passion for music and their part in it, Bridges and Powerlines can only get better from here.
