Battleghost – Don’t Be A Hero EP
Review by Allison Reames

Battleghost are ready to release their latest EP Don’t Be A Hero on May 11th as their follow up to their first full length album This May Hurt A Little that was released in June 2012. This Virginia native four piece is set to accomplish big things in the future in terms of this EP and touring. This six track EP, Don’t Be A Hero, shows that the boys are back at it again with the same insanely catchy hooks and full use of the double bass drum.

The band wastes no time by starting off with “Habitats,” the perfect blend of crashing symbols and strong vocals. While with some bands, the music of the instruments may overpower the vocalist, this is not the case. The overlapping vocals help to make this song stand out and the range of singer Dorian Cooke is clearly evident.

The third song “Boundary” is arguably the best track on the EP. It starts off with single strums on the guitar accompanied only by Cooke’s vocals and then takes off into something much more. This song sounds fairly heavily influenced by All Time Low’s So Wrong It’s Right album.

Battleghost uses great guitar riffs throughout the EP to keep it interesting and upbeat. There seem to be small influences from other bands such as Blink 182 and Sum 41, especially noticeable in “Steep Slope” as the riff sounds similar to Sum 41’s “In Too Deep.” Though it is enough to remind one of Sum 41’s song, Battleghost maintains it as their own.

Don’t Be A Hero definitely has the potential to get Battleghost out the on the radar. They have toured and opened for bands such as Bowling For Soup, State Champs, and Man Overboard among others, so be sure to catch them while they’re on the road in May with Fourth and Goal and Count To Four.

Overall Rating: 4/5
Recommended Tracks: “Boundary” and “I’m Gone”
