Every Time I Die – Ex Lives
Album Review by Anna Schultz

Being in the game for 15 years, Every Time I Die definitely know what they are good at and stuck to this with their sixth full-length album, Ex Lives.  This release maintains the heavy yet southern sound that the band has so carefully crafted and features bitter lyrics that still manage to be relatable.

The album starts out with a song that is 100% Every Time I Die.  Unrelenting vocals and shredding guitar are the perfect way to start off the album, showing that even though it has been 3 years since the band’s last release they are back and ready to pick up where they left off.

The southern influence that has always played a part in the band’s music really made its mark on this album.  Songs such as “Partying is Such A Sweet Sorrow” and “Business Casualty” have a sound almost bordering on country.  It’s impressive that this sound can blend so well with the hardcore aspects of the music to produce songs that are still in line with the rest of those on Ex Lives.

Although this album is musically similar to what ETID has dished out in the past, the lyrics are an element of this release that truly stand out. The lyrics are often lost amongst the harsh vocals but once they are found, they complete the album and make it stand out.  The often sarcastic lyrics aren’t afraid to question morals or bring up difficult topics. One line that truly stands out is “our mathematics and faiths are just ways of devouring space while we continue to devolve,” found in “Holy Book of Dilemma”  It’s clear that ETID have continued to grow in their writing and they have the experience to back their biting lyrics.

It’s no surprise that this band has found its place in the metalcore market and it is clear that the band has earned their spot on Warped Tour this summer. Pairing vocalist Keith Buckley’s harsh screams and melodic clean vocals with the roaring guitar that they are known for, ETID has kept their music fast and heavy and angry. Whether you’re looking for a new favorite or the ETID that you know and love, this record is for you.
