The Virginmarys – Divides
Review by Annette Hansen

There are times when you crave an album that resonates with your soul, and there are times when you just need a piece of music to offer you a good time. The Virginmarys fourth full length album, Divides, fits in more with the latter.

With an ear-pleasing blend of straightforward rock and gritty punk, the Virginmarys have put forth an album full of energy and musical highs. The first half of the album is largely made up of fast-paced, hard-hitting tracks, most noticeably with songs like the aggressive “Halo In Her Silhouette” and the punk tinged “Free To Do Whatever They Say.” The energy of the album reaches its peak, though, on the riotous and fun track “Falling Down” towards the end of the album.

While the band hardly steps back from its quick moving numbers, it does offer a few gentler moments particularly on the mellower “Moths To A Flame” and the enchanting closing track “Living In My Peace.” But even when the band takes things down a notch, there’s always this sense of building, a continuous crescendo that keeps the album moving forward.

The only real gripe with this album is that it doesn’t feel like it offers something that hasn’t been done before. Numerous comparisons could be made from track to track. Ultimately though, this album keeps it simple and gives listeners a solid collection of rock tracks that are impossible not to bob along with. Divides isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it is worth repeated listens.
