Behind The Song: The Rocketboys, “Viva Voce”

Austin’s own The Rocketboys are blasting off. With their track, “Viva Voce” debuting on the premiere of Glee’s final season, the rock outfit has since had the song hit #7 on iTunes Rock Singles Chart, and has performed at 2015’s SXSW. Recently, the band opened up about the hit single and it’s origin. You can check out the band’s lyric video for the track below.

I don’t know where I first heard the term viva voce, but it’s the perfect title for this song. It’s a Latin term that mean’s “with living voice” or sometimes “by word of mouth” and was actually the only song (of the four ep tracks) to start with a title.

The relationship between song, songwriter, and listener has been on my mind for a long time. Just thinking about what a song is and that it can mean one thing to one individual and then something completely different to somebody else.  And both of those meanings might be radically different from what the songwriter intended in the first place. But I still think songs are important. they can still breath life into an otherwise dead body, that’s why I love music so much and that’s why I want to write songs, and this one is about just that. It’s also kind of a Thank You to everyone who’s ever stood by the Rocketboys. You form strange, but amazing relationships when you tour the country and stay on a different floor every night. There is this interesting shared experience that you get to have with a select few where they are a part of your family, and you theirs. If it weren’t for the support of our fans and friends there’s no way we could ever do this.

This song basically says, we’re in this together. Thank you for supporting me, and let me support you.
