POUNDERS – “Separate Ways”

0
After countless years of music being made, the best songs always come from experiences with love, whether it’s budding or torn. Chris, Pounders, POUNDERS lead vocalist and guitarist, wrote “Separate Ways” about a break up, but you wouldn’t realize it by the tone of the song. Check out the story of how this song was made, structurally and lyrically, read the lyrics to the song, and take a listen to “Separate Ways” below!
Background
This song was one of the first songs that I (Chris) attempted writing with an 80’s sound to it. I was listening to a lot of The Police at the time and had gotten a job at Guitar Center and was experimenting with guitar sounds.
I had recently bought a reverb pedal and a chorus pedal, and my writing has never been the same since. I had also just gone through a recent breakup and hadn’t written about it – I was really busy at the time with work and other responsibilities that I wasn’t making much time for writing songs. So one night I told myself, “you need write a song about this break up now, while its fresh, just do it.”
I started piecing the song together, added in a cool reggae break down, something that The Police would do, and it really came together really quickly; that’s when I knew it would be a solid song. It was a new and fresh sound that POUNDERS hadn’t tried out yet.
We all loved the sound of it, it was fun to play, the chorus felt big, the lyrics felt strong. It felt like a really skid 80’s influenced rock song that we knew people would enjoy. The song is very simple when I take a step back and listen to it. The lyrics aren’t trying to be complex, the song isn’t “trying” either, it just flows, and I think we all really liked that. We are big fans of “less is more.”
We really hope that this song hits home for people out there
Lyrics
Something just don’t feel alright
I don’t like where this is going
Flowers have turned to ashes
Just don’t know where we went wrong

I wanted to fall in love
I wanted to fall in love with you

You said you would love me
I said I’m not happy

You think that I never tried
That everything is a lie
You know that I know that its true
There’s nothing else we could do

I wanted to fall in love
I wanted to fall in love with you

You said you would love me
I said I’m not happy
So lets go our own separate ways

The chemistry between you and me
Was lost somewhere
We fought the fight we thought was right
But we were so wrong

You said you would love me
I said I’m not happy
So lets go our own separate ways
