Goodnight Lois – “Relax”

0

With a population smaller than Rhode Island, Bristol isn’t home for many.  It’s home to a zoo, universities, and one hell of a Broadway theater.  But, beneath all the city clutter, bright lights, and road traffic, sits an alternative rock band just waiting to get their break. We’re talking about Goodnight Lois.  When you first lend an ear to these dark horses, you’ll know exactly why we had to inform you of them. When you combine the sustainable energy of their music with the unique vocals that sound much similar to Brandon Boyd, we promise you’ll have these guys on repeat for a while!

Background
“Relax came” together in Danny’s garage, with bass player Karl experimenting with different time signatures. We went through a few before we settled on the brooding 12/8 for the verses, just to change things up a little bit. The song became this vast canvas for us to apply our ideas, and yet the mystery came from the lack of attack. The less we did to it, the more grand it became. This enabled us to bring the intensity to the chorus, almost the embodiment of ‘light and dark’. Lyrically however, it is very dark. It is the telling of a person on the outside of a friend’s personal struggle with life, and their failed attempts at suicide (“Relax, what are you doing to yourself?”). In the context of the album, it was always going to be the last track. We hope that it leaves the listener with an anticipation for more. What happened to the character? Did they manage to do it? On a more band level, we wanted to make the listener want to know what is next from Goodnight Lois, where can they go from here, whilst still giving them a big slice of our abilities at this early stage of our band’s life. Hopefully we have succeeded!

Lyrics

Relax. What you doing to yourself?
You know that it’s killing you slow.
You think that there was no-one before you
You like that there’s nowhere to hide

Something’s coming for you this time
You’re breathing but you’re shaking
Something’s coming for you this time

Relax. What you saying to yourself?
You know that you can’t let it go
You think that I’m right here beside you
You hate that you cannot die

Something’s coming for you this time
You’re bleeding but you’re shaking
Something’s coming for you this time

You take me to the edge.

Relax. What you doing to yourself?
You lie ‘cuz there’s nowhere to hide
You think that there was no-one before you
You know that it’s killing you slow.
