Five Albums By Kids That Rock Whose Parents Rocked
Words and Picks by Perry Fish

Some things just come naturally.  For these five artists, musical talent is in their blood.  Sometimes it can be difficult to live up to the reputation of your parents, but it’s a whole different story when you’re the child of a well-known musician.  Even so, their talents are something any parent would be proud of.

Ben Daniels Band – Comin’ From The C
Most people don’t know that actor, Jeff Daniel’s first love was music.  Most people also don’t know that he has a son who discovered the same passion.  In 2008 Brian Daniels formed The Brian Daniels band, with George Merkel on guitar, Tommy Reifel on bass, and Wesley Fritzemeier on drums, fiddle, and mandolin.  Their American folk sound came to life in their first album, Coming From The C, showcasing their natural talent.

Sean Lennon – Friendly Fire
John Lennon is notably one of the most talented musicians and activists of the 1970’s.  His music, both independent and as a member of The Beatles, created a movement that continues to live on today.  Almost as if completely intentional, destined if you will, his youngest son Sean Lennon came into the music scene in the late ‘90’s.  His airy vocals and smooth jams, eerily reflect the sound of his father, an untouchable talent, seemingly brought back to life, if only through a chorus or two.

Justin Townes Earle – Harlem River Blues
If country infused blue jams are your weakness, then Justin Townes Earle is right up your ally.  His soulful voice and honky-tonk influences can be credited to his father, singer-songwriter, Steve Earle.  His fourth album, Harlem River Blues, released in 2010, is one of my personal favorites.

Charlotte Gainsbourg – IRM
More well known for her acting career, Charlotte Gainsbourg, emerged in the music scene side by side with her father, French musician, Serge Gainsbourg.  Her abstract lyrics and inventive sound effects have gained mixed reviews.  Even so, her talent is undeniable in her 2009 release, IRM.  The multilingual tracks are beautifully eerie.  Don’t speak French?  You’ll be so mesmerized that you won’t even care to notice.

Jakob Dylan – Women and Country
As the son of one of the most famous folksingers of all time, Bob Dylan, Jakob Dylan had some big shoes to fill.  His latest release, Women + Country, debuted in 2010.  The relaxed, country vibe, with influences of old-time rock jives well with the classic sounds of Bob Dylan.  My favorite track on the album is “Everybody’s Hurting”.  The melancholy melody is beautifully serenading with the combination of Dylan and Neko Case’s vocals.
