Reschedule after reschedule, the Wild Nothing and Beach Fossils co-headlining tour is finally happening! Wild Nothing celebrates the 10th anniversary of Gemini while Beach Fossils celebrates the 10th anniversary of their self-titled album. I got to see them play a sold-out show the first night they played Thalia Hall in Chicago, IL.
Hannah Jadagu
Hannah Jadagu, newly signed to Sub Pop Records, opened the show. She is the reason people say get to the show early and see the opening band. Her music is exactly what I’ve been looking for: dreamy and lyrically heavy, ear-catching. She did a great cover of MIA’s “Paper Planes” that fit seamlessly into her set. If I had to pinpoint her vibe, it is between The Japanese House and Frank Ocean. She is a gem and I can’t wait to see what the year has in store for her!
Wild Nothing
Wild Nothing opened the show with “Summer Holiday,” the second track off of Gemini and the crowd got to dancing! Gemini takes you on a stroll through the foggy dream sequence of an indie romance film from the eighties. After the helpless year and a half we’ve all endured, escapism is what we are looking for. Playing songs like “O Lilac,” “Drifter,” and “Live in Dreams,” we got to taste what Gemini was all about. Wild Nothing broke up the set by playing their popular cover of Kate Bush’s “Cloudbusting,” everyone screamed in excitement. Even though this is an anniversary tour, they made sure to play songs from the newer projects like “Partners in Motion” from Indigo and “Shadow” from Nocturne.
Beach Fossils
Beach Fossils opened with their track, “This Year.” The fans were so excited to hear them play, at some points there were mosh pits in the middle of the crowd! They played their hits like “Down the Line” and “Shallow.” I was transported right back to my Tumblr era days, feeling somber but I was also just excited to be at the show. Midway through the performance, I went up to the balcony to get a better view of the sold-out show.
When they played “Sleep Apnea,” they turned off all the lights and had everyone shine their phone lights in the air. It was a grounding and beautiful moment. They closed out the show with their encore of “May 1st,” “Out of the Way” and “Daydream.” Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing came out for “Out of the Way“ and the crowd went wild, their worlds colliding!
It was truly a beautiful show. Hannah, Wild Nothing and Beach Fossils really give you a show to remember so if you have the chance, I highly recommend seeing them and pregame with the best Tumblr 2010 indie playlist!
