Set It Off – Cinematics
Review by Maria Prado
Ever since Set It Off signed with Equal Vision last summer, they’ve done nothing but make waves. With the release of the Horrible Kids EP and several tours, the Tampa, Florida based rockers are back with a new album, Cinematics. The band has finely tuned their orchestral pop punk sound with their first full length album.
The album starts off with “Thoughts That Breathe”, a huge orchestral intro and eerie synths that lead straight into “Nightmare”. The song starts off with strong riffs and drums, drawing you in with catchy lyrics that’ll be stuck in your head for days.
Next is one of the released singles off of the album “Swan Song”. The lyrics tell of a scorned Carson, “I’ll admit I’m impressed by your vanishing act/place your bets on your best guess of when you’re coming back.”, the lyrics seem straightforward, but leave the true meaning up to interpretation, and makes it a great song.
While the rest of the album follows suit with powerful lyrics and guitars, the band slows it down with “Dad’s Song”. Homage to his father, the song starts off with quiet vocals and shows how dynamic the band’s range is, and finishes off with a powerful band outro.
Overall, Cinematics is a solid album for new and old fans of Set It Off. With the dynamic ranges of the songs, this album shows how much the band has grown and how big they will become.
