Chromatics

The Wiltern // Los Angeles, CA // May 2nd, 2019

Photos and review by Sara Salari

The synth-pop, dreamy noise filled band by the name of Chromatics, kicked off their second night of their Double Exposure Tour their first tour in over five years. We got to catch up with the band of four at their “current” hometown show.
Chromatics is an American electronic band formed by guitarist Adam Miller in 2001, originally started in Portland, Oregon. The band is now comprised of vocalist Ruth Radelet, drummer Nat Walker and producer/instrumentalist Johnny Jewel. The performance given far succeed my expectations of sight and sound.
The energy these members were giving off on Thursday night was exhilarating and the audience was receiving it with gratitude. It had been a beautiful day in Los Angeles, with the sun shining and the anticipation of seeing Chromatics growing. As we made our way down to The Wiltern, we knew what we were in for.
“Time Rider” stole my heart for the night. It was sung so elegantly by Ruth and her voice actually sounds better live than it does on the recording. With the projections of the open road in the background, it placed the audience in the space the song was written in. Chromatics will be releasing their new album, Dear Johnny, later this year and are continuing their Double Exposure Tour well into next month, the whole tour wrapping up in San Francisco on June 11th.
