“Know My Name”- RadioDriveBy

1. You just released your new single “Know My Name.” How do you think the response has been?

[Trent Clark] So far the response has been great! It’s always a little scary releasing new content, especially when you start exploring different directions. Seeing that people are picking up what we’re putting down is an amazing feeling.

2. You also released a music video for “Go All Night.” Who came up with the idea for the video and how was filming?

[Evan Yuen] We all collectively sat down together and brainstormed ideas for what we envisioned for the video. We filmed all day for like three days straight and I was sick at the same time, but it was a lot of fun! Most of all the scenes were shot all over Southern California.

3. What can your fans expect from any upcoming releases that are in the works?

[EY] New music, videos, and some new merch as well! Also, we have touring plans following our release this summer, so definitely look out for some dates.

4. What would you say have been your biggest influences on your new music?

[TC] I’d say all-around good songwriters have been our biggest influence. Listening to all the greats and taking notes from them was a big part of our writing process.

[Adam Simons] Yeah, for me it was taking inspiration from pop music I love, and putting a different spin on these songs.

5. What are your favorite and least favorite parts of the recording process?

[TC] For me, I love watching everything come together and hearing that final product, but it is very time consuming and there are definitely times where you are listening to the same 15 second blips for hours on end. That can get a little draining, but all-in-all I enjoy almost every aspect of being in the studio.

6. Did you ever get stuck with writer’s block while working on your new music and if so how did you combat it?

[EY] All the time. We would either try working on something else or getting some fresh air would help a lot. It would kind of reset our minds a little bit.

7. You have some tour dates coming up on the West Coast in June and July. Have you noticed a difference in the shows in, say, California where you’ve played some shows versus when you play at home in Arizona?

[TC] I have noticed differences in the show-going culture, but all the areas we have been to have always been really great. People everywhere receive music differently, but all the shows are similar in that it’s always a really fun, positive experience.

8. Is there a notable music scene in AZ?

[EY] I would say so! There’s a pretty wide community of bands all over town so playing local shows is always a good time. We always see familiar faces at shows so its nice to see people come out and support.

[TC] I would definitely say so. A lot of amazing artists have come out of Phoenix and are continuing to blossom here. There is tons of talent out here, and we are really blessed to be a part of that scene.

9. What message do you, ultimately, want your music to send?

[TC] I don’t know that there is necessarily a specific message that we try to convey, but more so a consistent vibe of positivity. We just want to be a source of happiness for our listeners. I’d say lyrically speaking, I don’t necessarily try to write about any one thing, but I write about the experiences that I am having. If people can relate to that, great! I think naturally, since all of us are rolling through life collectively, other people are bound to relate to what we are putting out to the world.

[AS] Whether it’s a really emotional song or just a fun, dance tune, I hope people can find comfort and happiness in our music, and that they can relate to it. If they need something to put them in a good mood or just to sing in the car, I’d hope that our songs could do that.

10. What would you say has been the most difficult part of your career for you all personally and collectively?

[TC] Personally the hardest part has been continuing to stay fresh and keeping ideas rolling at times. I am always writing, experiencing, etc., but there are some moments that you just get stumped. Those moments are both frustrating and healthy at the same time though, because every once in awhile you just gotta walk away for a bit and let the ideas come to you rather than seek them out. Collectively, I think the struggle is just what any band at our level experiences which is keeping the ship moving! Forward motion is always on the agenda, so when things slow down for a second at times it’s a little disheartening since we are so used to always going, going, going. We know we have a destination and we are to anxious to get there, but sometimes you gotta take some detours!

11. How did you, or do you continue to, overcome these struggles?

[TC] It’s all a sense of perspective really. Keeping your mind right is the most important thing, because if you don’t do that, then you let your problems become bigger than they actually are.

12. What has been the ‘highlight’ of your career so far?

[AS] I think we’ve had a lot. Playing internationally was incredible. Having our music hit radio was both surprising and humbling. And some of the shows we’ve gotten to do here in the states have been just amazing. It’s hard to pick just one since I enjoy so much of what we do.

13. What is the one dream the moment at which point either personally or collectively you would be able to say yes I’ve achieved this, I’m living my dreams?

[EY] Our whole Philippines experience totally feels like a dream now looking back on it. I would’ve never imagined playing a festival with bands I listened to when I was like 14 (All Time Low, Anberlin, etc…). Also having a number one single over there is totally mind blowing. I still can’t put that together.
