The Story So Far – What You Don’t See
Review by Colleen Casey
The Story So Far is a five-member band from California, consisting of Parker Cannon, Kevin Geyer, William Levy, Kelen Capener, and Ryan Torf. The release of their debut album, Under Soil and Dirt, created major hype as this band has been dominating in the pop-punk genre. The announcement of a second album release had fans buzzing on the internet wondering if it was even possible for them to create a follow-up that could be just as good or even better.
On March 26th, TSSF released their highly anticipated second full-length, What You Don’t See. After listening to the first track, “Things I Can’t Change”, my doubts were quickly cleared up. This song opens the album giving off what sounds like it could belong on Under Soil and Dirt. It’s followed up by two of my personal favorites, “Stifled” and “Small Talk”. The album continues with even more hard-hitting songs in the middle with “Right Here,” “Empty Space,” and “The Glass.” Each song on this record has me wanting to sing and scream along with the catchy fast paced choruses, angsty lyrics, and powerful instrumentals.
There might be people disappointed with the album saying that it sounds too similar to Under Soil and Dirt. But why change their sound completely when they had such success with their first release? Why not improve that sound and make it stronger? Make it stronger is exactly what they did. You can clearly hear the maturity and development in each member’s delivery, especially the emotion in the vocals. What You Don’t See has songs not only about relationships, but also dealing with friends and being away from home.
I don’t believe this record will have as big of an impact as their first full-length, but overall it shows that The Story So Far is at the top of their game. So take a sigh of relief pop-punk fans, because this band is going to be sticking around for a while.
