Take colored pieces, many small ones, and create something magnificent with the pieces, assembling them together. A greater, beautiful creation has been made. That’s a mosaic.

It’s been quite some time since this quintet has put out something complete such as a whole record. But finally, this Friday, May 24, the Fearless Records-signed band Capstan is set to release their third full-length album titled The Mosaic. Get ready to be fully engaged for a while, for it consists of a total of 18 songs, which do vary in length throughout the entirety of it. Expect guitar shredding, acoustics, violins, smooth vocals, screaming and overall an enjoyable experience as this album carries listeners through track by track.

Whether on purpose or not because it’s just so good, Capstan starts off with a soft intro in their opening track “I. Revolve.” However, once the vocals pick up right before the chorus, which also gets a bit heavier, the listener has then grasped onto an idea of what the album will be like the rest of the way. And listening closely one will hear the depth of the lyrics sung. They’re true, deep and raw. It can take a lot for artists to really showcase their experiences and feelings through lyrics, showing such vulnerability, but here and through the entirety of this record, Capstan does not fail in being vulnerable with their fans.

Continuing on, Capstan stays steady with following more of a hardcore path with their sound in the first tracks. Nothing too incredibly heavy, but it does slowly progress in that direction as each song plays next. Suddenly there’s an acoustic tune, though, with vocals that can be felt so deep with its intensity of emotions behind the lyrics. “An Open Letter” is a shorter one, but it will leave you with lingering thoughts about it. And then it picks up again for a moment.

Overall, it’s unknown what’s next to come as this album is being listened to, Capstan keeping listeners on their toes throughout its entirety. One would recommend sitting with it in a calm environment, lights dimmed, for a first listen through. This is full of surprises, and you don’t want to miss out on it. The post-hardcore band from Florida has carefully combined multiple different elements, such as various small, colored pieces, and made a piece of art that is unforgettable to their fans. And be ready for their closing track, a beautiful dynamically put-together song that may leave you hungry for more of The Mosaic.
