Must See
Moda Center // Portland, OR // September 27, 2022
Review by Bruna Cucolo
One main act, not even an opener. Only him along with his three backup vocalists and big band behind him. And it felt like a full lineup.
On Sept. 27 the jazz-inspired singer Michael Bublé made his stop in Portland, OR for his Higher Tour. Inside the venue at Moda Center the seats began being filled with fans as soon as doors opened. The singer’s latest album cover was projected onto a very large curtain in front of the stage, hiding anything behind it. Soon enough, a countdown began. The curtain was raised and a spotlight shined on Bublé where he began to sing “Birds flying high” from the song “Everything” as he walked across above the band. Or so everyone thought. “And I’m feeling good” is heard through the arena’s speakers and suddenly he appears onstage, rising from underneath, right onto the front and center. The band kicks in with a punch and a shower of sparks shot from the stage’s floor. Bublé has opened his own night.
With over 20 songs on the setlist including a small set of encores, the Canadian singer put on one of the most magical shows. He sang covers of “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley songs such as “Can’t Help Falling in Love” with his own twist along with his own tunes like “Haven’t Met You Yet,” “Home” and “Higher.” He sang across the stage left and right and up and down the walkway that led to the middle of the venue, making sure everyone would see him since that’s why he was there. His love for performing for a crowd was felt, which made it look so easy for him.
The night felt like an emotional ride, but one which made the audience feel good and more than just happy. The crowd was exciting, too. They sang along and laughed at all of Bublé’s jokes — yes, Mr. Bublé is quite the funny guy. Not only did he put on a concert, but he let his humor shine through, and it was more than accepted by everyone at the venue.
To only listen to his songs, you can just play his music on your own time. Instead, not only does he perform his songs, but he also engages with the crowd, his band, and vocalists and has breathtaking visuals both beautiful in color and mesmerizing by its magic, making one feel as if on a high. The Higher Tour isn’t over just yet. He’ll continue entertaining crowds in Canada this month, then head to different continents through 2023. Get tickets here to experience more than just music.
