Oakland, California natives Ash Reiter and Will Halsey are the front members of the lo-if, psych pop band Sugar Candy Mountain. The two, along with their live bassist and drums members, lead the night at The Echo on May 10th feeding their cult-like following with all their favorites from start to finish.
The night’s set had a mellow yet suspenseful start with one of their oldest hits from 2014, “Echolalia.” We were just beginning our evening in Los Angeles, knowing there was so much more to come.
Ash’s vocals are the kind that are best heard live with the instruments accompanying and never overpowering. As if it were only a dream we were all floating on the same cloud and I think that’s the type of affect Sugar Candy Mountain wants to have in their audience.
“666” was played right in the middle of the set, which gave us enough time to set into the groove. The band seemed as joyous delivering the song as we were to hear it. That exchange of emotions is what gave the night its special touch.
Sugar Candy Mountain recently released a single titled “In My Own World.” The song about creating boundaries in time and space was played beautifully as their second to last song. Leaving them to close out their set with “Tidal Wave.” We left The Echo with our spirits a little brighter as well as a little more tripped out.
Their next live date is June 15th at Hickey Fest in Leggett, California. No word of an upcoming album yet, but be sure to check out their latest album, Do Right.
