Steel Panther

As part of their Sunset Strip Live tour, American ultimate parody-yet-virtuose rockers Steel Panther have transformed London’s Roundhouse into one big glam metal party for one night. ‘Bringing Hollywood to your neighbourhood’ is this tour’s tagline, and in order to fulfil such an ambitious statement, Steel Panther have played 80s rock classics alongside the band’s greatest hits- all whilst accentuating their highly entertaining Californian personas.

It’s hard to seriously review Steel Panther’s musicianship because it’s almost the last thing that grabs your attention in their shows. The humoristic, inappropriate, non-PC lyrics and attitude, the constant flirting with the audience (and the audience participation), the jokes, the outfits, and the impersonations- all of these contribute to the experience that is Steel Panther that is much beyond their music.

The musicianship does need to be mentioned though because these guys truly are great musicians. Michael Starr (vocals) performed flawlessly (and is a fantastic Ozzy impersonator apparently!), and Satchel (guitar) demonstrated impressive shredding and soloing throughout the night.

The women who have seen Steel Panther before knew exactly what to expect when (as per usual in Steel Panther shows) they were invited to go on stage to join the band and dance along to “Pour Some Sugar On Me” (Def Leppard cover) and Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer.”

In a city where many people try to be as politically correct as possible, it was almost a surreal experience to witness a sold out show that is so non-politically correct. The 3000+ crowd was there to have fun and the band was there to have fun so what were the chances that it was not going to be?

Supporting Steel Panther tonight was metal guitarist Gus G who has last played in the famous London venue in 2010 as Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist. Tonight, he performed with his own material following the release of his solo album Fearless last year.
