It’s a profound feeling when a song is able to permeate through your skin and sink straight into your soul. That moment when you stop hearing the music and start feeling it, it’s pure magic. On Feb. 1, Small Talks released their debut album A Conversation Between Us and with it have seemed to capture exactly that sort of magic.

It’s clear on A Conversation Between Us that the band has refined their sound since their already promising 2017 EP, Until It Turns To Petals. The tracks are more infectious this time around while still remaining endearingly heartfelt. Small Talks even seems to explore some new sounds on the record, most notably on the dreamy indie pop track “Teeth” and the edgy electronic laced “Thinking of the Sun.”

But even when the band isn’t treading new water, they still manage to shine on more staple tracks like the previously released singles “Oceans” and “Quiet Sounds” where they showcase their quintessential indie rock sound while still grasping a pop sensibility that keeps the songs trapped in your head.

Some albums are the sort that propel you dance and sing your heart out, while other albums are the sort that gently coax you into wistful introspection. Small Talks latest creation is the latter. A Conversation Between Us is the sort of album that will no doubt capture the hearts of kids who like to get lost in melancholy thoughts.

From it’s brighter moments on tracks like “Better For It” and “Nicotine and Tangerines” to it’s more solemn and moody tracks like “Bed” and “Anybody,” A Conversation Between Us eases its way into your heart and begs you to listen all over again.
