Based in Portland, Oregon, Glacier Veins’ unique dream punk style and quality songwriting have been making waves throughout the alternative music scene over the past few years. With their latest EP, Dreamspace, out now via Common Ground Records, we caught up with vocalist Malia Endres on the band’s roots, her own musical influences growing up, and what we can expect to see from the band in 2018.
For those that may not be aware, how did Glacier Veins get together and form?
I started Glacier Veins as my solo project in the summer of 2015 with the intention of turning it into a band. I was eager to get music out and play shows so I released some acoustic demos and started playing solo shows, hoping to find people to join through doing that. We played our first full band show in October 2015 and I’ve had a lot of different musicians playing with me since then.
Being from Portland, how has the city’s music history and influence impacted Glacier Veins?
I was inspired to play music growing up from watching my parents support local bands and go to a lot of shows, but I found my place in the music scene when I was in middle school and started going to shows for smaller touring bands at venues like the Hawthorne Theatre and Backspace (RIP). I was watching those bands thinking that that is what I wanted to do. Going to shows over the past 10 or so years allowed me to connect with a lot of different people and that made it easier to start a band and start playing shows.
How would you describe your music to listeners that may have not heard it before?
We go by the genre “dream punk.” I like to think of that as not so much a combination of different, broader genres, but our own thing; high energy, emotional music with a positive/reflective message that makes you want to groove and sing along.
You will be playing BLED FEST later this spring, what are you most looking forward to about the festival and what can fans expect from a Glacier Veins live show?
I’m really excited to play and meet up with a lot of different bands and people who we haven’t had the chance to interact in person with yet. I’m super grateful to be a part of a line up with friends and bands that I love, and to also make the trip to the midwest for the first time! We have so much fun playing shows, so you can definitely expect a high energy performance. For me, it’s like a combination of emotional release and fun energy.
You recently started touring around North America! What has been one of your favorite memories while out on the road?
The best parts of touring are meeting up with old friends and meeting new friends and meeting so many dogs. This past tour we had an impromptu afternoon pool party show at someone’s house in Houston, TX. We threw it together over Twitter about a week before, and it was a small gathering, so intimate and cool.
As 2018 continues on, what can we expect to see from Glacier Veins?
We’re gonna keep touring! I’m always writing new music too, so although you may not see any of it this year, know that new music is in the works and on the way.
