MTV’s Unplugged series ran from 1989-2009 and featured stripped-down performances from artists such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alicia Keys, and Lauryn Hill. Last night, MTV aired the first episode of the series revival, starring Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes.
“There [are] a lot of moments in a career that shape you as an artist,” Mendes said in a pre-show interview with MTV. “I think about bands like Pearl Jam and how much their Unplugged affected them as a band. People literally, if you ask them about [Pearl Jam] today, still think about that. Puts a lot of pressure on tonight, in a good way, so I think I’m ready. I hope to make tonight a very career-sculpting thing.”
