Artist You Should Know: Wild Wild Horses
Interview and Words by Rachael Dowd
Hailing from London, Wild Wild Horses is bringing a fresh and unique sound to the alternative music scene. With well-written quality tracks that captivate listeners from the minute they hit play, Wild Wild Horses is a band that should be on everyone’s radar as they prepare to write and record new music for everyone to fall in love with next year. We recently caught up with the band, and they talked all about their time on the road this past year, how being from the U.K. has influenced their music over the years, and what 2017 has in store for them.
For those that don’t know, how did Wild Wild Horses get together and form?
We met through some friends in London, as we all had roles in different bands as writers, musicians and artists.
You guys recently wrapped the tour with Made Violent and From Indian Lakes. How did the overall tour go, and were there any particular dates that stick out as being your favorites? Why?
The tour was a lot of fun. Both FIL and Made Violent were such good blokes to be playing with night in and night out, and we learned a lot watching them perform for a whole month.
Detroit, Atlanta, Chapel Hill, San Antonio and New York City really stuck out. The crowds were incredible, and the energy from those guys pushed us to push harder. That’s when we felt that magic in the room.
You shared on social media this past summer that you were in the studio working on new music, what can you tell us about the new songs and what has the recording process been like?
We’ve been busy…
We never stop writing, even when we’re not in the same place. We’ve been working on tracking new demos for the next bunch of songs, and it’s going to be really hard to narrow them down to just a few.
Since the tour is finished, do you have plans to head back into the studio and continue working on new music? Did you do a lot of writing while on the road this fall?
We wrote a little on the road, but the travel and sound check schedule was pretty intense. We played something like 26 shows without much down time. The size of the U.S. isn’t really REAL until you’ve covered pretty much every inch of it and driven 12,500 miles in a month…
We’ve already started back up in the studio working on and recording new songs for the new year.
When it comes to songwriting, is there a designated member that tends to do most of the writing or is it a collaborative effort?
Instrumentally, everyone is working on things all the time. Jack’s always singing something crazy-sounding into his phone in a public place and looking totally insane. Those ideas often form the songs’ melody or lyrics and then we build around those as a band.
Coming from London, how do you feel the music scene in the city has influenced Wild Wild Horses?
We’ve all played so many shows in London as different acts and entities, that it has undoubtedly influenced our sound, whether we want it to or not. The U.K. has a pretty sick musical history, so we’d love to be a part of that eventually.
Recently, bands like Bastille, The 1975, Arctic Monkeys and Muse have paved the way for bands like ours in the U.S., so we can’t wait to play to more American crowds over the next year.
You are very active on the band’s social media platforms. Whether positively or negatively, how do you feel social media has impacted Wild Wild Horses over the years?
It has absolutely helped us get to know our fans and connect with them after shows and while we’re on the road. And we get to share this experience with people that want to see it, which sometimes feels insane to us as well.
Some pretty surreal shit happens in our lives, and it’s cool to be able share that with people so they see how weird it can get.
Do you have any tours lined up in the new year?
We are focusing on writing and recording at least another E.P., so we don’t have a tour booked yet. We love playing live more than any other aspect of what we do, so we can’t wait to get back out and meet some more people and play a bunch more shows as we put a ton of new music out.
