Behind The Song: The Federal Empire – “I Never Liked Your Friends”
The Federal Empire members Chad Wolf (formerly of Carolina Liar), McKay Stevens and Keith Varon were all brought together to write songs for electronic staples The Chainsmokers and David Guetta. But after a few writing sessions together, it became evident that the trio was brought together for something bigger than making hits for other people–they were meant to become The Federal Empire.
“I Never Liked Your Friends” is the perfect introduction of The Federal Empire to the world. It’s a catchy, upbeat song that really packs a punch lyrically. We caught up with the band to find out what inspired the song. You can read what they had to say and listen to the song below!
As we were all coming out of difficult relationships and talking about what was going on in our lives, we wrote I Never Liked Your Friends. In the wake of a breakup with someone you love, sometimes the only solace is that you never have to hang out with their friends again. We wrote the song in Chad’s house in Laurel Canyon of Hollywood Hills and just grabbed different interesting instruments and started recording and laying down ideas. It’s actually kind of a sad song coming from a broken relationship that used to be good, but the production and gang melodies make it something people can sing and dance to when we play it live. The story is real and comes from a difficult place, but it also has a sense of humor to it by getting that last word in saying to your ex…’I Never Liked Your Friends.’
