Don’t Miss Out: With Confidence

Festival season is in full swing, and with that comes the biggest traveling festival of the summer- Warped Tour. This year the tour features a ton of throwback bands like Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Less Than Jake, New Found Glory and so many more! And while we love these bands and appreciate their contribution to the scene, we want to introduce you to some of the bands that you may not know about. Who knows? You might get introduced to your new favorite band.
For the next installment of Don’t Miss Out, we caught up with Joshua Brozzesi, drummer for one of our favorite up-and-coming bands, With Confidence, to talk about their summer so far on Warped Tour and their new album, Better Weather!
How is touring in the States different from touring in Australia?
The biggest difference is definitely the length of the tour. In Australia, tours last maybe a week to ten days and by then you’ve hit all the major cities and maybe even some B markets stops. I’ve also noticed that America has way more variety across the country. Totally different accents, climates and scenery. I love touring both, but it’s definitely exciting to be in the U.S. for the first time as we’ve done Australia maybe 12 or 13 times now.
How would you describe Warped to someone who has never been/played?
It’s honestly just like a summer camp for bands. I wake up every day and get to spend my day watching my favorite bands. I play a set and then do stuff like meet and greets, press and setting up packing down in-between. The nights are awesome too. There’s usually a BBQ and people just play games, drink and hang out. Definitely even better than I imagined.
What song will you open/close the set with and why?
At the moment, we’re opening with our upcoming single, “Voldemort.” And we have been closing with “Keeper.” I feel like they’re two songs that we’ve really been pushing lately. Both are up tempo and fun and get the crowd psyched up. We’ve changed it up from time to time but it seems to work best!
How has the reception been to Better Weather?
We’ve been completely blown away with the reception to Better Weather. It’s amazing to go all the way across to the United States and have people screaming lyrics and going nuts to these songs that we jammed out back in my shed in Sydney. We’ve seen heaps of love from our fans back home too so I’m really excited to head back after Warped and our shows in the Philippines and get to play the whole album live for the first time.
How are you adapting your live show for Warped?
We’re playing a shorter set than usual and since its our first time here we’ve tried to pack it with stuff from the older EPs and also the album. It’s really cool because a some of the people in the crowds have never heard of us, some have heard the album which came out last month and some have been waiting for us to come over here for years. We’re trying really hard to play a show that keeps all those different people happy and interested and so far it seems to be going okay!
You signed to Hopeless Records this past year and are playing Warped with labelmates Yellowcard and Emarosa. Have you gotten any advice from the Hopeless family about how to tackle the tour?
We’ve had heaps of support from the label and other bands going into Warped. Loads of advice from our friends As It Is and also our Aussie mates from The City Shake Up. Jayden [Seeley] also got a bunch of vocal tips from Bradley [Walden] from Emarosa.
Warped can be pretty long and grueling, but bands as big as Blink 182 and Green Day cut their teeth on these stages. How do you think Warped will change/affect the band?
I think we can already see that we’re improving every day on stage. If we come out of this tour after playing 44 shows and we’re not a better band, then we’ve done something very wrong.
What’s your plan post-Warped?
We have some shows lined up in the Philippines which is super exciting, plus a lot of Ini’s family live over there. Then we head home, we’ve got a week off to catch up with all our friends and family (and my dogs️) and then we’re off on Motion City Soundtrack’s very last Australian tour. That’s a big one for us as it’s a huge influence, and we feel very lucky to be seeing off such an important band who have played a part in our writing and listening to music when we were growing up.
